The following letter, addressed to Austin City Council Member Sheri Gallo, expresses support for the development plans for The Grove at Shoal Creek:

Dear Ms. Gallo:

We would like to advise you of our support for ARG Bull Creek, LTD (The Grove) and the development plans they have presented for The Grove at Shoal Creek.  Westminster has hosted dozens of meetings at which The Grove has listened and been very receptive and responsive to the concerns of not only our residents, but also those in the surrounding neighborhoods.  Also, Westminster has had several conversations with The Grove about the development and the potential for Westminster to expand our operations and be part of the development. 

Westminster is a not-for-profit community with almost 50 years of experience and stability within the Austin community.  In short, Westminster is an Austin institution that promotes an active lifestyle for seniors that enhances personal growth, fulfillment, and wellness within a community atmosphere in a desirable Austin neighborhood.  Our highly regarded reputation as a premier continuing care retirement community with life care benefits, our dedicated staff and industry-leading management team, make Westminster an ideal place for seniors to pursue life with purpose.  We currently offer 328 Independent Living Apartments, 22 Assisted Living units, an 85-bed skilled nursing facility and 30 Memory Support units.  Westminster continues our mission to provide an exceptional place for seniors to live and enjoy life; and to provide excellent healthcare for seniors in Austin.

We would like to share with you some of the benefits the proposed project “The Grove at Shoal Creek” will bring to Westminster residents and staff:

  • Affordable housing for our staff
  • 17 acres of parkland within walking distance for our residents and staff to enjoy
  • Almost 2 miles of walking trails
  • Retail shops within safe walking distance of our community
  • Multiple restaurant choices
  • Additional outdoor areas for our residents to enjoy with their families
  • Additional housing for our residents families
  • Improved sidewalks

The new development will include single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums, apartments, neighborhood businesses, independent and assisted living, and at least 17 acres of park space. It will be a mixed-use project that is park-centered, environmentally friendly, and close to jobs and public transportation.  The proposed Master Plan for The Grove is a culmination of all that was envisioned in the Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan and a collaborative vision between the developer and citizen input.  It is likely that Westminster will be the Assisted Living/Independent Living product in The Grove at Shoal Creek, directly across Bull Creek Road from our existing campus. 

Below are some of the details we hope to include in Westminster’s potential project at The Grove at Shoal Creek.

  • 73 additional Independent Living apartments
  • 92-96 Assisted Living units, including 36 Memory Support units
  • Additional Common Spaces/Amenity spaces such as an additional Dining Venue, Day Spa, Health Clinic, Home Health offices, Fitness Gym
  • Additional Administration/Human Resource offices
  • Additional underground parking

As you can imagine this type of expansion of our services will increase our ability to serve not only our residents, but also increase our ability to serve the Austin Seniors community as well.  There is and will continue to be an increased need to serve seniors in Austin.  This has been our calling for almost 50 years. The addition of this project to our campus and the development plans The Grove has announced for The Grove at Shoal Creek will positively impact the Austin community and the seniors we serve for decades to come.  Through this expansion of our services, Westminster will be even better positioned to provide more services and amenities to our residents and increase the services we provide to more Austin residents, including increased rehabilitation services and capacity for Assisted Living services.  The completion of this project will also allow us further flexibility to reposition our original Preston building for the future as well.  The overwhelming majority of our [500+] residents support The Grove at Shoal Creek and the prospect of expanding Westminster’s role in serving Austin seniors.  We ask you to consider this as you move forward in your deliberations regarding this project.

We ask for your help and support for our continued mission to serve seniors in the Austin area and in our community.  We are very excited about The Grove at Shoal Creek, the potential for Westminster to expand and be a part of this well designed project, and the benefits this project brings to Austin.  We urge you to support The Grove at Shoal Creek.
